The history of Charlotte’s Uptown began at the junction of Trade & Tryon Streets, being the center of the ‘village’ where the original Indian paths crossed and created the city’s main arteries.  The 100 acres then, now 220 acres of blocks around the ‘square’ (the center of the city) were laid out in a nearly perfect grid of blocks, each being approximately 400 feet long.

In the mid-1800′s, the area had began to boom and the city fathers, using the intersection of Trade and Tryon Streets, divided the village into four quadrants.  Each quadrant represented a political ‘ward,’ each having its’ own elected official representative.  These wards, abandoned the political divisions in the mid-1900′s but, kept their names as First, Second, Third and Fourth Wards.
